The Indiecation is an Indie music blog and website created by me, Ilana Tel-Oren. A little bit about myself: I am a Los Angeles native, and have over 14 years of experience performing classical and band music. My love for off-beat, independent music is over 12 years strong.
The majority of my high school and undergraduate years were spent perfecting the art of oboe playing and reed making, while immersing myself in the various subgenres of rock music. My appreciation for music has evolved over the years, often fixating on one sub-genre at a time. In middle school, this was hard rock and heavy metal to the likes of Korn and Metallica. At the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, I discovered punk music through a car pool buddy, and promptly started wearing fishnets and sewing back patches of the Misfits and Subhumans on my black sweaters.
Upon attending College, my taste in music expanded and enjoyment of artists such as the Mars Volta, Radiohead, and Blonde Redhead introduced me to more complex and subtle music. At the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State Long Beach, I was exposed to music theory and appreciation courses, in which I became fascinated with minimalist and other modern music techniques. As my performing repertoire grew, I became consumed with sourcing new music and local talent.
Currently, I’m living in Los Angeles, working as a Social Media Coordinator full-time and getting my Master’s Degree in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica. In my free time, I attend local concerts, read about and listen to music. I am a fan of attending small, intimate shows, and being surprised by the talent presented. I’m an avid fan of anything 80’s influenced, unique, and interesting. My current favorite artists include Grizzly Bear, Beach House, and Real Estate among others.
This blog was created to express the feeling of being transported to a unique destination within yourself every time you hear live music. Everyone has their own unique experience when listening to music. I invite you all on this journey with me, as I embark on my very own”Indie-cation.”
